Dr. Gil Barbezat was born in Switzerland, and had his undergraduate education in Cape Town, South Africa, before undertaking postgraduate education in South Africa, and the USA, UK, Switzerland and New Zealand. He is an Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the Dunedin School of Medicine, University of Otago, and was a consultant gastroenterologist at Dunedin Public Hospital from 1978 – 2003 and at Mercy Hospital from 1995 – 2012.
He has been actively involved in teaching, research, clinical practice and administration. His research has been recognised with his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand. He has an ongoing interest in medical education and research, and in community affairs.
He is currently a trustee of The Healthcare Otago Charitable Trust and a Patron of the Otago Medical Research Foundation.
