The Richmond Shilling Trust
The late James Adair Lawrie Richmond, who died on 10 May 1881, and who was the proprietor of the Richmond Scotia Hotel, directed in his Will that the income from part of his Estate should, on Christmas Day, be divided among or applied for the benefit of the patients of Dunedin, Queen Mary and Wakari Hospitals. The initial amounts distributed are estimated to have been about one shilling (10 cents), and being a publican, it was his intent that the funds would be sufficient to purchase a beer- not that in-patients would be thinking of that!
The bequest in conjunction with other trust funds, this tradition still exists, over 130 years later with each patient receiving around $10. This is funded from the Richmond Estate and the Trust each year.
